This remarkable growth reflects BYD’s strategic expansion and increasing market share within the region. The company’s impressive performance not only highlights its competitive edge but also signifies a shift in consumer preferences towards electric vehicles. As BYD accelerates in the European market, its ability to surpass established players like Tesla underscores the evolving landscape of the automotive industry. This trend indicates a promising future for BYD as it continues to innovate and meet the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions.

BYD continues to perform strongly in the European Union , as demonstrated by the market figures released today by ACEA for August 2025. Compared to the same month last year, the progress is significant. Furthermore, last month, the Chinese automaker once again surpassed Tesla in total sales in the EU market. The August figures also highlighted another interesting fact: Stellantis returned to growth, albeit slightly (+3.4%), for the first time in over a year.
THE NUMBERS
BYD Accelerates in the European Market
In August, BYD registered 9,130 units in the European Union , compared to 3,030 in 2024. This represents a 201.3% increase . And what about Tesla ? Last month, it registered 8,220 cars in the EU , a 36.6% decrease . Looking at the January-August period, however, the Chinese carmaker registered 67,632 vehicles, an increase of 244%. Overall for the year, Tesla still leads with 85,673 vehicles, but this is still a 42.9% decrease. In short, BYD is growing at a very high rate, while Elon Musk’s company continues to struggle.
And if we also include the United Kingdom and EFTA countries, Tesla recovers and stays ahead of BYD even in August. However, the Chinese manufacturer continues to show triple-digit growth rates, while Tesla continues to show a significant decline.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
BYD isn’t the only Chinese automaker growing; the others are also showing significant progress. The European auto industry is therefore increasingly under pressure as it faces several challenges, including American tariffs, electrification, and increasingly fierce Chinese competition. In Italy, the best-selling plug-in hybrid model overall is a BYD model.
